A couple weeks ago, I attended a two-day studio lighting workshop that took place at Colony Studios in Brooklyn. The workshop was lead by fashion photographer Lara Jade who's work has been published in various magazines. Day 1 consisted of a behind the scenes look at industry professionals at work and hands-on experience of how to shoot with studio lighting. Lara demonstrated her lighting setup and I was able to photograph models in five different gowns. On Day 2, all the attendees shared 5-8 of their favorite photos from their portfolio for an open critique lead by Lara. She went over important details regarding marketing, pricing, and how to put yourself out there in the fashion industry. Towards the end, we pulled our favorite image we shot from day 1 and followed Lara step-by-step on her retouching techniques. Personally, retouching is my favorite aspect of photography because it feels like I'm digitally applying makeup. After finishing up the workshop, everyone grabbed dinner and drinks to celebrate.
Lara Jade's workshop was an awesome opportunity that I will never forget! Watching Lara's lighting setup made me realize that simplicity is best. In Lara's words, I just have to make it happen and take charge of my own career because I'm the only one stopping myself from succeeding. Complacency is what kills inspiration, imagination, and motivation. There is always room for growth, so I make sure to always check my ego at the door. I thank Lara for taking me in and allowing me to be apart of this unique opportunity.
Here are a few of my photographs from the workshop. Enjoy!
